All aboard! First train to Meadowlands leaves Sunday

I took the train on Monday from Rockland to the new Meadowlands station, via Secaucus Junction, as part of a ceremonial inaugural ride meant for New Jersey top dogs and the press (aka, bottom dogs).
The public gets its turn, and the service it’s first real-world test, on Sunday when Giants Stadium hosts an international championship soccer match.
As of early this week, only 20,000 tickets had been sold to the game, so it’s not likely the trains will be packed. That will likely also be the case when they run during Jets and Giants pre-season games next month. However, the runs should give NJ Transit officials an opportunity to work out any glitches.
The Pascack Valley, Port Jervis and Main/Bergen lines will get you to Secaucus Junction (or Hoboken Terminal should you feel the need to go one stop further than necessary) from Rockland.
Here’s what NJ Transit says fans need to know about Sunday’s service:
• The first train will depart Hoboken at 11:30 a.m. and Secaucus Junction at 11:40 a.m., arriving at the Meadowlands at 11:53 a.m.
•Trains will operate between Hoboken, Secaucus Junction and the Meadowlands Rail Station approximately every 10 to 20 minutes before and after the game.
• After Sunday’s game, the last train will depart the Meadowlands at 6:48 p.m. and stop at Secaucus Junction at 7:01 p.m., arriving in Hoboken at 7:13 p.m.
• Purchase round-trip tickets in advance from any NJ Transit rail ticket vending machine or ticket office. Select “Meadowlands Sports Complex” as your destination. (On older ticket vending machines, use station code 410.)
• Off-peak roundtrip tickets may be used for travel to the Meadowlands Rail Station. (ORT tickets may be used for travel to the Meadowlands at all times except departing New York Penn Station weekdays between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.)
• On the train, present your ticket to the conductor. If you are connecting at Secaucus Junction, your ticket will be returned to you.
• Trains to the Meadowlands depart from the lower level.
• Visit www.njtransit.com for information on connecting trains at Secaucus Junction or Hoboken Terminal, specific fares and parking.
