“Driving While Intexticated,” Banned Here — Now Throughout State?

It looks like it will soon be illegal to send someone a text message while you’re driving. And really, talk about something that should be common sense.
The state Senate voted today to make it illegal to text, play video games or surf the Web while behind the wheel. The Assembly had passed it earlier.
Well, we did it first. That’s the word from County Executive Andrew Spano’s office, which jumped on the news to remind everyone that the county led the way in this area. A press release from Spano’s office says the county was the first in the state to ban texting while driving — some call it Driving While Intexticated — late last year. The law went into effect March 9.
The state law would also require teens to have more driving experience before obtaining a driver’s license.
“This is all about safety of our kids and the driving public in general,” Spano said in the release. “Distracted driving and inexperience are two of the most common causes of accidents. All drivers – regardless of their age – need to keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road. And all drivers, but particularly our new drivers, need to practice extensively before they are on their own.”
