The firstAmtrak coach car to be refurbished by federal stimulus dollars will be back on the rails and carrying passengers next week, the railroad announced.
It’ll get back on track at an Amtrak maintenance yard in Bear, Del., and Amtrak is celebrating the event with a press conference Monday. The car cost $687,000 to renovate.
With money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act — the stimulus effort — Amtrak is spending $58.5 million at its Bear facility to take 60 unused passenger cars out of storage and return them to service by February, 2011.
To so that, the railroad has hired 55 new employees.
