Metal construction plates return to Tappan Zee Bridge tomorrow

April
24

Drivers who travel the Tappan Zee Bridge tomorrow will find the new-and-improved metal construction plates featuring 100-foot asphalt ramps at two spots in the Rockland-bound lanes.

On Sunday, drivers heading toward Westchester will also pass over the plates and ramps.

This plate is 2 inches thick and will be used on the bridge's main span.

The plates, needed to replace 10 joints on the bridge, will be around until late August/early September.

To ease their ride and avoid last year’s traffic nightmares, the company hired by the state Thruway Authority will be building 50-foot-long ramps both leading to the plates as well as away from them.

These plates are 1.5-inches thick and will be used on the west deck truss.

The work will be done tonight and tomorrow night. It had been scheduled to be done last weekend, but was postponed due to rain.

I’ll have a story about the deck project in tomorrow’s paper and, of course, on LoHud.com.

Also, tune into LoHud.com for a live broadcast of traffic conditions on the Tappan Zee Bridge Monday morning. We will be broadcasting from the bridge.

In the meantime, here’s the upcoming work schedule:

·Tonight: Work will begin at 8 p.m. resulting in the closure of one right Rockland-bound lane, to three lanes at 9:30 pm, to four at midnight until 8 a.m. from Interchange 10 to the east deck truss on the bridge.

Due to the lane closures, the entrance ramp from Broadway (southbound) in Tarrytown will also be closed from 10 p.m. until 8 a.m. Traffic will be detoured to the entrance ramp from Route 119.

Two Westchester-bound left lanes will be closed from Interchange 9 to the east abutment from 8:30 p.m. till 8 a.m. These lane closures are for the placement of a steel plate system with asphalt ramps for the installation of new deck joints on the Westchester-bound main span and southbound west deck truss.

· Tomorrow: Work will begin at 8 p.m. resulting in the closure of two right Westchester-bound lanes, to three right lanes at 10 p.m., until 10 a.m. from Interchange 10 to the east deck truss on the bridge.

The southbound entrance at Interchange 10 in South Nyack will be closed and traffic will be detoured on a posted route through Nyack to Route 59 near Interchange 11.

Two left lanes in the Rockland-bound direction from Interchange 8 to milepost 13 will also be closed from 9 p.m. to 10 a.m. as part of this work.Due to the Rockland-bound lane closures, the entrance ramp from Broadway (southbound) in Tarrytown will also be closed from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Traffic will be detoured to the entrance ramp from Route 119.

These lane closures are for the placement of a steel plate system with asphalt ramps for the installation of new deck joints on the Rockland-bound main span and northbound west deck truss.

All work is weather-permitting. Traffic updates will be broadcast to drivers via signs along the Thruway and by Highway Advisory Radio, 530 AM, in the Tappan Zee Bridge corridor.
