More than 50,000 people could pack Pearl River’s streets this Sunday to watch the St. Patrick’s Day parade.
Getting there will require some planning. The parade starts at 1:30 p.m. Here are a couple of options:
• By car: Early Sunday morning, Orangetown police will begin putting up temporary “No Parking” signs on many local streets to make way for the parade route and ensure emergency vehicles can get through on narrow side streets. The streets will be shut down at 11 a.m., and remain closed until the evening. Drivers will have to find places where they can legally park on the street since Pearl River doesn’t have a municipal parking lot. Police recommended carpooling if you must drive there or parking further away and walking.
• By bus: You can park at the Palisades Center mall in West Nyack and catch Transport of Rockland (TOR) 92 at the mall’s bus shelter (located near the Bed, Bath & Beyond entrance) once each hour from 10:35 a.m. to 4:35 p.m. The bus leaves Spring Valley hourly from 10:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The last of the buses returning to mall and Spring Valley will pass through Pearl River at 5 p.m. Passengers should meet the bus on Route 304 at East Central Avenue.
Because of the parade, the county Department of Public Transportation notes some buses will be detoured.
From 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., TOR 92 eastbound buses will not travel on Central Avenue in Pearl River. Instead, they will take Route 304 south to Kinderkamack Road. From there, buses will turn onto East Grand Avenue and then onto Middletown Road to reconnect with the normal route of Gilbert Avenue to Veteran’s Memorial Highway towards Route 303.
TOR 92 buses traveling in the opposite direction will use the same streets in the opposite order.
Coach USA Rockland Coaches buses will also be detoured. Bus routes 11-A and 11-C will travel south on Middletown Road and will exit onto Route 304, continuing into New Jersey. Route 20 will travel from Route 59 onto Western Highway to Orangeburg Road, making the normal stop at Rockland Psychiatric Center.
Buses traveling in the opposite direction will use the same streets in the opposite order.
• By train: An easy way to get to Pearl River is to take the train, even if you live in Rockland. Park for free at Nanuet or Spring Valley and catch a New Jersey Transit train to Pearl River. They stop at Pearl River station at 10:19 and 11:28 a.m., 12:28 and 2:25 p.m. If you’re coming from New Jersey, northbound trains will stop at Pearl River at 11:15 a.m., and 1:24, 3:22.
