It’s almost like a riddle: When is a plane crash considered a miracle?

Maybe I’m still a kid at heart, but to me it’s a miracle every time an airplane loaded with people and luggage lifts off the ground. But the crash of U.S. Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson Read more of this entry »

To Albany, and none too soon.

January
12

The MTA Board is heading to Albany for help, and you can be sure the members won’t be flying in private jets.

They’ll be going by rail, of course, and they’re making sure we know about it.

In my column today, I pointed out that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority budget hearings start on Wednesday, and still there is no movement to put in place the rescue measures recommended by the Ravitch Commission. Time is of the essence. The MTA wants to set its rate increase in March.

Well, today we get notice that Read more of this entry »

That infamous Green Lane track crossing

January
9

That Green Lane track crossing in Bedford — the site of another car-train accident on New Year’s Eve — is somewhat like Westchester’s version of the Bermuda Triangle.

It’s not just that it’s had more than its share of accidents. It’s that they seem Read more of this entry »

Alerts galore

January

It’s hasn’t been a good day for the MTA or its customers so far today.

You may have heard of the track fire that’s stopped Metro-North trains from going into or out of Grand Central Terminal. (If you haven’t, check out the Lohud site here and see the update in the list on the right.)

But check this out. If you go Read more of this entry »
