With all the talk about getting people to ride their bikes more — for health and to cut congestion and pollution from cars — the East Coast Greenway Alliance is planning a Westchester County Bicycle Summit in 2009. That’s one of the things the group will do with a $12,000 grant it received from the Westchester Community Foundation.
The ECGA is a Rhode Island-based group creating a continuous bicycle route linking East Coast cities and stretching from Calais, Maine, near the Canadian border, to Key West, Fla. Part of the trail would go through Westchester: The current plan is to run it along the service road for Interstate 287, through downtown White Plains, then down the wooded areas lining the Bronx River into the Bronx.
The funds will be used to promote cycling in Westchester. In addition to planning the summit, the ECGA intends to “expand bicycle routes,” and to work toward better bike storage on buses and at Metro-North Railroad stations.
