With Howard Permut all the best. This is the Ossining resident’s first official day as president of Metro-North Railroad.
Permut, who was the railroad’s senior vice president, takes over for Peter Cannito, who retired after nine years in charge. Cannito announced in March that he would step down, but yesterday was his last official day.
The new president is no stranger to the railroad, with it’s 6,000 employees and 700 miles of track. When Metro-North was born, on Jan. 1, 1983, Permut was the director of planning.
He’ll sit in the president’s seat at his first Metro-North board meeting at 8:30 a.m. Monday in the Metropolitan Transportation Authority offices at 347 Madison Ave. in New York.
Metro-North gives 260,000 rides on a typical weekday from the Lower Hudson Valley, as well as the Bronx and southwest Connecticut. Last year, the railroad gave more than 80 million rides.
