U.S. Senator Charles Schumer today called on the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to add a Hudson Valley resident to its Board of Commissioners.
A rule requires that four of six New York State seats to be filled by residents of New York City, Currently, the other two seats are held by Long Island residents.
Schumer, D-N.Y., said the Hudson Valley’s unique point of view should be represented to help the Port Authority to “more intelligently manage its geographically varied operations.â€
Last November, the Port Authority assumed control of Stewart International Airport in New Windsor.
“With the Port Authority now taking over Stewart, it’s essential that the Hudson Valley has a local representative on the board to ensure the wishes and concerns of local residents across the region are heard loud and clear,†Schumer said in a statement.
The agency must change its rules in order for the governor of New York to appoint a new commissioner to the agency’s board.
Port Authority spokesman Pasquale DiFulco told my colleague Craig Wolf at the Poughkeepsie Journal the following this afternoon: “We thank the Senator for his input. We work very hard to include the Hudson Valley community in the process of Stewart International Airport’s development, but Board members are appointed by the Governors, and the makeup of the Board is determined by the bi-state compact.”
